Chemical Exposure Monitoring (CEM) at your workplace and why is it important

Chemical Exposure Monitoring (CEM) simply means an assessment of chemical airborne vapors, fumes, dust particles or mists that exposed to workers. To ensure that employee exposures to are within permissible limits. According to Occupational Safety and health (USECHH) Regulations 2000, employers shall ensure that the chemical is being monitored using an approved method of monitoring and analysis. Chemical Exposure monitoring should be conducted by a hygiene technician who recognized by Department of Occupational and Health (DOSH) Malaysia.


The PURPOSE of Chemical Exposure Monitoring (CEM) is as follow: -


  1. To comply with legal requirement regarding Chemical Exposure Monitoring (CEM).

  2. To assess employee exposure level to hazardous chemicals according to Permissible Exposure Limit specify under the Schedule I and Schedule II of Occupational Safety and Health (USECHH) Regulations 2000.

  3. To make a conclusion in the Chemical Exposure Monitoring (CEM) Report whether the employee personal exposure level to hazardous chemical:

  • Might have occurred, or

  • Most likely will occur or

  • There is no exposure and to make a conclusion whether the chemical exposure level have been complied or exceeded the specified permissible exposure limits (PEL).

4. To make a recommendation in the Chemical Exposure Monitoring (CEM) Report according to the results of the monitoring that need to be taken by the employers to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health (USECHH) Regulations 2000.
